What is a steam bath generator?

A Harvia steam bath generator is a device used in steam baths to produce steam. Harvia is a well-known brand that produces high-quality wellness products, including steam bath generators. Harvia's steam bath generator produces steam by heating water. The device is equipped with an electric heater that heats the water to the desired temperature. The generated steam is then directed into a tiled cabin to create a comfortable and humid environment.

How does a Harvia steam generator work?

The steam generator consists of a number of components that work together to provide the optimal steam bathing experience. The electric heating element heats water to produce the desired steam. The amount of steam produced can be precisely regulated by the generator's control unit. Modern steam bath generators, including those from Harvia, are usually equipped with digital controls that allow you to adjust the steam production and temperature in the steam shower exactly according to your preferences. This way you can experience a customised steam bath that suits your preferences and needs. Steam bath generators also have the option of optional components such as connecting an automatic outlet valve and a fragrance concentrate pump to add fragrances to the injected steam.

What should you look for when buying a steam bath generator?

The power of the steam generator depends on the volume of the steam bath. To calculate the volume, simply multiply the length, width and height of the room. This then gives the volume.

Suppose your steam bath has a length of 2 m, a width of 2 m and a height of 2 m. This gives a volume of 8 m³.
In this case, a steam generator with 9 kW would be sufficient.

It is important to choose the Harvia steam generator according to the right power. When you switch on the steam generator, the steam bath should be heated to a temperature of about 43 °C with almost 100 % humidity after about 10 minutes. As soon as the temperature is reached, the generator pauses until the temperature falls by about 2 °C. Then steam is generated constantly again until the cabin temperature has reached the desired temperature again.

If the steam generator's output is too low, the temperature will only rise very slowly. When the steam bath door is opened and warm air escapes from the steam bath, it takes much longer to reach the desired temperature again, especially compared to a more powerful generator. In addition, a steam generator that is too weak runs constantly at full power and therefore also produces steam constantly.

If the steam generator is too strong, there is a risk that the steam bath will heat up too much. This can cause the walls and seating surfaces to heat up considerably and the room air absorbs this heat, resulting in a barely noticeable cooling. When the generator reaches the set temperature, the output is throttled, which also reduces the steam production. Only when, for example, the steam room door is opened or the temperature drops, does the generator start producing steam again.

Maintenance of the Harvia steam generator

Regular maintenance of your Harvia steam generator is crucial for its longevity and optimal performance. A carefully maintained steam generator ensures that you will always enjoy the best steam bathing experience. Here are some essential aspects of maintenance that you should pay attention to:

  • Emptying the bottom tray (drip tray)

The bottom tray of the steam bath generator collects excess dirt particles produced during operation. Regular emptying of this tray is important to ensure that the unit works properly.
To empty the base tray, first switch off the generator and allow it to cool down. Then open the drain valve to drain the water. Empty the tray when it is full. Make sure that the valve is completely closed after emptying before restarting the generator.
  • Cleaning the water level sensor

The water level sensor plays a crucial role in the operation of the steam bath generator. It measures the water level in the generator and ensures that there is always the right amount of water to produce steam.
It is important to clean this sensor regularly as it can become contaminated with limescale or dirt over time. Thorough cleaning will help maintain its accuracy and functionality. Switch off the generator and allow it to cool down before cleaning the sensor. Use a soft, damp cloth and a mild soap solution for cleaning and avoid abrasive cleaners that could damage the probe.
  • Limescale removal

The build-up of limescale in the steam bath generator can have several negative effects. Firstly, it can affect heat transfer, causing the generator to require more energy to reach the desired temperature. This can lead to higher energy costs and shorten the life of the generator. Secondly, limescale can clog the pipes and valves, resulting in a reduced water flow rate and uneven steam distribution in the steam bath. This can result in inadequate steam production and a compromised user experience.
There are several methods to remove limescale deposits in the steam bath generator. One common method is to use descaling agents that have been specially developed for this purpose. These descaling agents contain acids or other chemical compounds that can dissolve the limescale and remove it easily. It is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully and observe safety precautions, as some descalers can be corrosive.
Another method of removing limescale is to use natural household remedies such as vinegar or citric acid. These natural acids also have the ability to dissolve limescale deposits. You can make a solution of water and vinegar or citric acid and circulate it in the steam bath generator. After a soaking time, you can rinse the generator thoroughly with clear water to remove any residue.
It is advisable to set regular maintenance and cleaning intervals for your steam bath generator to prevent the formation of limescale deposits and to maintain its performance. This may vary depending on the manufacturer and frequency of use. Some generators may have automatic descaling features to facilitate the cleaning process.
Regular limescale removal is critical to ensure the optimal function and longevity of your steam bath generator. By following the manufacturer's instructions and using the correct cleaning methods, you can effectively remove limescale deposits and maintain the performance of your steam bath.

Descaling with citric acid solution

Citric acid is an excellent, natural means of descaling your steam bath generator and is absolutely harmless to health. Alternatively, other commercially available descalers can be used - always follow the instructions on the pack.

Follow these steps to effectively descale your steam bath generator with a citric acid solution:

  1. Preparing the citric acid solution
First mix 50 to 80 grams of citric acid with one litre of water to make your descaling solution. The exact amount of citric acid may vary depending on the hardness of the water and the degree of limescale deposits.
  2. Activating the steam generator
Switch on the steam generator and let it run for about 10 minutes. This helps to loosen the existing limescale deposits and prepares the system for the descaling process.
  3. Safety shut-off
After the activation phase, switch off the steam generator using the main switch. This is an important safety step to eliminate any risk of injury during the descaling process.
  4. Access to the water tank
Remove the plug on the top of the steam generator. This allows access to the water tank into which the citric acid solution is filled.
  5. Filling the citric acid solution
Carefully pour the prepared citric acid solution into the water tank. Make sure that no solution is spilled. Then replace the stopper to close the water tank securely.
  6. Reaction time
Leave the citric acid solution to react for about one hour. During this time, the solution works to remove the limescale deposits.
  7. Completing the descaling process
After the soaking time, switch the main switch back on. If the power failure memory is activated, the steam generator will start automatically without having to press button 1.

Do not forget to rinse the system thoroughly after the descaling process to remove all residues of the citric acid solution. With these steps, your Harvia steam generator should be free of lime deposits and work optimally again.
