How big does the electric sauna heater have to be?

The size of an electric sauna heater is usually indicated by the heater's power in kilowatts (kW). The power of a sauna heater depends on the size of the sauna and other factors such as insulation, ceiling height, room temperature and ventilation.

A general rule of thumb is that a sauna heater with an output of 1 kW is sufficient per 1 - 1.5 cubic metres of sauna volume.

However, it is important to note that this rule of thumb is only a rough estimate and that the actual power required for a particular sauna size may depend on various factors. Professional advice or an exact calculation by an expert can help determine the optimal size of the sauna heater for a particular sauna.

General guidelines: (width x height x depth = volume of the sauna indoors)

4.5 kW sufficient for 3 - 6 m³ cabin volume

6.0 kW sufficient for 5 - 9 m³ cabin volume

8.0 kW sufficient for 8 - 11 m³ cabin volume

9.0 kW sufficient for 10 - 14 m³ cabin volume

If the sauna cabin is located in the cellar where it is colder, in the summer house or if the sauna has a lot of glass surface, then the sauna heater should be selected stronger.

How much does a sauna heater cost in consumption?

Operating a sauna heater can incur costs that depend mainly on electricity consumption. To get an idea of the operating costs of a sauna heater, various factors must be taken into account. First of all, the power of the heater is crucial. A sauna heater with a higher output (expressed in kilowatts, kW) consumes more electricity. Take, for example, a sauna heater with an output of 8 kW. The duration of use also plays an important role in calculating the costs. For example, if you operate your sauna for two hours, this means that your 8 kW heater will consume 16 kWh of electricity during this time (8 kW * 2 hours = 16 kWh).

The electricity price per kilowatt hour (kWh) is the next factor you should consider. This can vary depending on where you live and your electricity provider. In Germany, the average electricity price for private households was around €0.30 per kWh at the end of 2021. However, let's assume a price of €0.35 per kWh for this calculation.

To calculate the cost per use, simply multiply the energy consumed (in kWh) by the price per kWh. In our example, this would be 16 kWh * 0.35 €/kWh = 5.60 €.

So if you use your sauna once a week, the monthly costs are 4 weeks * 5,60 € = 22,40 €.

However, it is important to note that this is only a rough estimate. The actual cost can vary depending on how often and how long you use your sauna, what temperature you set and how good the insulation of your sauna is. In addition, electricity prices can vary.

What kind of electricity connection do I need for an electric sauna heater?

A power connection is usually required to operate an electric sauna heater. The specific type of power connection required may vary, depending on the power of the sauna heater you choose. A common standard for sauna heaters is a three-phase heavy current connection, also known as three-phase current or power current, which is usually 400 volts. This type of connection offers more power than a typical household connection and is therefore suitable for larger and more powerful sauna heaters.

In terms of the amount of current that such a connection can deliver, the typical range is 16 to 32 amps. This amount of current enables the sauna heater to reach the high temperatures required for sauna operation.

However, there are also smaller sauna heaters that can be operated with a normal 230-volt connection. These models are often suitable for smaller sauna cabins or for use in households where a high-voltage connection is not available.

How long does it take for a sauna to heat up?

The heating time of a sauna depends on many different factors. First of all, the size of the sauna plays an important role. A larger sauna needs more time to heat up than a smaller one. The power of the sauna heater also plays a decisive role. A heater with more kilowatts can heat up the sauna faster than a heater with less power.

In addition, the quality of the insulation of the sauna cabin can influence the heating time. A well-insulated sauna keeps the heat inside better and can therefore reach the desired temperature more quickly. In contrast, a sauna with poor insulation can take more time and energy to reach the desired temperature.

The ambient temperature also has an influence on the heating time. If the outside temperature is particularly cold, it may take longer to heat up the sauna. Similarly, a cold sauna may take longer to heat up than one that is already somewhat preheated.

In general, however, you should expect a sauna to take between 30 and 60 minutes to heat up to a typical operating temperature of around 70 to 90 degrees Celsius. It is important to remember that it takes a while for the stones in the sauna heater to get hot enough for a good infusion. It is therefore advisable to switch on the sauna in good time before you plan to use it.

How do I connect a sauna heater?
