Do I have to have a wood-burning sauna heater approved by a chimney sweep?

In Germany, a newly installed wood-burning sauna heater, including the chimney, must be approved by a chimney sweep. This requirement also applies if a stove is structurally modified or refurbished. This is required according to §24 of the Chimney Sweep Trade Act.

The chimney sweep plays a crucial role in ensuring that your sauna heater is installed and operated properly. He checks that the heater and chimney are installed safely and that the exhaust gases can be discharged effectively. These checks are extremely important to minimise the risk of accidents, such as fires, and to ensure that your heater is operating as efficiently and environmentally friendly as possible.

After the stove has been installed, the chimney sweep must carry out a so-called fireplace inspection. During this inspection, the chimney sweep checks the stove and the chimney for safety and efficiency. He checks whether all components are installed correctly and whether the stove and chimney comply with the applicable safety and environmental regulations.

It is therefore important that you inform the chimney sweep in good time before you put the wood-burning sauna stove into operation. Once the stove is installed, you can make an appointment with the chimney sweep. He will check the stove and the chimney and then tell you whether they can be accepted or whether improvements or repairs are still necessary.

It is essential to follow the chimney sweep's instructions and recommendations carefully. These are not only for your own safety and the environment, but are also required by law. Failure to comply with these regulations may result in fines or even the decommissioning of the woodburning sauna heater.

Is a sauna heater a fireplace?

A fireplace basically refers to a device in which heat is generated by burning fuels. This includes, for example, boilers, ovens, cookers and fireplaces. Typically, fireplaces burn fuels such as wood, gas or oil.

With regard to sauna heaters, the classification as a fireplace depends on the type of fuel used. A sauna heater that is powered by electricity does not burn any physical fuel and generates heat through electric current. Therefore, an electrically powered sauna heater is not considered a fireplace in the traditional sense.

A wood-burning sauna heater, on the other hand, burns wood to generate heat. Therefore, it falls into the category of fireplaces. These wood-burning sauna stoves are mainly used in traditional saunas to heat the air and stones. They produce the high temperature and specific humidity characteristic of the sauna.

As wood-burning sauna stoves are considered fireplaces, they are subject to approval in Germany. This means that they must comply with certain safety regulations and be approved by a chimney sweep. The chimney sweep checks that the stove and the associated chimney are safe and properly installed and that the exhaust gases are discharged correctly. It is therefore important that you contact your responsible district chimney sweep before installing a wood-burning sauna stove.

Can I use normal stones for the sauna heater?

Sauna stones are an integral part of any sauna experience. Not only do they serve to store and release the heat generated, but they also help regulate the room climate by generating steam when infused. It is therefore crucial to choose the right type of stones.

Basically, experts recommend using sauna stones that have been specially manufactured and prepared for sauna heaters. These stones have been chosen for their properties, such as their heat resistance and low water absorption capacity. They are usually denser and more resistant to the extreme temperatures and humidity conditions that prevail in a sauna.

The use of normal stones in a sauna is not recommended. While normal stones may seem suitable at first glance, they can break or even explode at high temperatures, posing a potential hazard to sauna users. In addition, normal stones can contain dust, dirt and other impurities that are released into the sauna air when heated and can cause health problems.

When buying sauna stones, it is therefore advisable to choose stones that have been specially manufactured for sauna ovens. These stones are treated and prepared in such a way that they can withstand the extreme conditions in a sauna. They are also clean and free of any impurities.

When using a wood-burning sauna heater, the sauna stones should have a size between 10 - 15 cm. This size ensures sufficient air circulation and prevents the stove from becoming blocked by stones that are too small.

Can I set up any wood-burning sauna heater?

In Germany, you cannot install just any wood-burning sauna heater. There are several reasons for this and it has to do with a number of regulations and standards that apply to the installation and operation of sauna heaters in Germany. These serve primarily to ensure user safety and minimise risks, such as fires.

First of all, the wood-burning sauna heater you want to install must comply with the legal regulations. This includes, for example, the Federal Immission Control Ordinance (BImSchV), which regulates emissions and environmental effects of heating systems and stoves. A stove that does not meet these requirements may not be operated in Germany.

In addition, there are certain technical standards and certifications that a wood-burning sauna stove must meet. Most manufacturers of wood-burning sauna heaters offer models that meet these German standards and are certified accordingly. Before you buy a sauna stove, you should therefore make absolutely sure that it has such an approval.

In addition to the requirements for the heater itself, there are also building regulations that must be observed when installing a sauna heater. For example, there must be a fireproof base on which the heater is placed. In addition, a sufficient safety distance from combustible materials must be maintained and the exhaust gas routing must be correctly executed.
