Sauna Test - How do I recognise a good sauna?

On some days, everyday life demands all our energy: pressure to perform, stress and deadlines ensure that our organism longs for relaxation and a place to rest. If you don't want to go to a sauna or thermal bath for this purpose, you can consider buying a home sauna. So that the sweat room becomes a decades-long companion within your own four walls, there are a few things to consider when planning.

The material of the sauna - sauna test in the first stage

It makes sense to use only tested and high-quality components. This ensures that no harmful chemicals are released during a sauna session. In addition, they should be free of PEG, as the preservative can damage healthThe wood should primarily retain moisture and heat. Especially the Nordic spruce is particularly suitable in this context. Raw materials that can be used without hesitation in terms of sustainability and emissions. The use of FSC-certified woods is also recommended.

This international certification system guarantees that the natural building materials come from responsibly managed forests. When taking a sauna, much of the heat is lost through the ceiling, so it is important that it meets the current RAL standards. Another important point when building a home sauna are the glass elements. They should be at least six millimetres thick and made of safety glass.

The sauna equipment

When purchasing, sauna lovers can choose the interior design themselves or opt for a complete package that already contains the essential products. With the first alternative, customers have much more freedom when it comes to the individual equipment of the hot-air bath. Sensual light effects such as LED colour panels for the wall, the installation of infrared radiators or the attachment of loudspeakers for soothing sound effects are to be mentioned in this context. The range of sauna accessories on offer is considerable, so interested parties must think carefully about which elements they would like to have and what they can do without. Sauna seats and benches certainly belong to the latter category, as they are an essential part of every home sauna. All seating surfaces must be ergonomically shaped and made of splinter-free wood.

Furniture made of Abachi and Poplar wood are particularly suitable here, as they can withstand both high temperatures and humidity. Furthermore, ventilation is an essential element. In order for our body to be able to relax in a pleasant way while taking a sauna, it is advisable to install a draught-free ventilation system that can be regulated.

The sauna heater under test

As the differences in price between the different performance classes are small, consumers may wish to choose the next higher class

It is the heart of the home sauna cabin. It is crucial that no danger emanates from it and that no sauna visitor can injure himself on it. It is ideal if the electric sauna heater is protected by a grille. Its outer surfaces should also not exceed temperatures of 100 degrees. So that the hot-air bath does not have to be put off after a strenuous working day, special attention should be paid to the heating time of the heater. As a rule of thumb: on a surface of two square metres, the heater must provide a power output of at least six kilowatts - eight kilowatts is even more effective.

Since the differences in the price segment of the individual performance classes are small, consumers should possibly choose the next higher class. Likewise, the absorption of the stones is of central importance. The higher this is, the better a constant radiant heat can be achieved. In order to achieve this, the purchase of a sauna heater for home use is recommended, which can absorb at least 15 to 20 kilograms of sauna stones. Those who want to enjoy the full wellness feeling with the steaming infusions must invest in an oven with a capacity of up to 100 kilograms - if space permits. Because the stones hardly cool down at all, the infusions can generate a high level of humidity. This aspect is important for all those who indulge in the joys of extreme sauna sessions.
