Build your own sauna

The desire to have your own sauna can be realised in a wide variety of living conditions. It is just as possible in your own house or property as it is in a condominium or rented flat under certain conditions. The prerequisite for your own sauna is always the availability of sufficient suitable space and an environment that allows the installation of a home sauna from various points of view. Building your own sauna is becoming increasingly popular because it not only saves you money, but also allows you to better fulfil your individual wishes.

Basic ideas for a do-it-yourself sauna - sauna kit

Before you start building your own sauna, you should think about a few basic principles. These include, for example

Build your own sauna - installation site

The place where you build your own sauna should be sufficiently large and in any case well ventilated. Sufficiently large means that the room must offer enough space both in terms of height and floor space for the installation of the sauna plus all-round circulation space for air exchange. Sufficient ventilation also plays a decisive role here in order to effectively prevent rotting and mould formation. A room with windows is well suited for this; if there are no windows, at least sufficiently powerful ventilation systems must be installed. In rented flats, the installation of a sauna must always be agreed with the landlord.

Every sauna should have a waterproof floor that is easy to clean and preferably also has a floor drain.

If you have a sufficiently large plot of land, you can also install your sauna with wood-burning stove in a garden shed, provided it has a sufficiently large power connection. This brings us to the topic of

Self-build sauna - technical requirements

This includes more than just the power connection, which must be installed by an authorised electrician specifically for the sauna. If you want to build a sauna with a wood-burning or gas heater, you must also have a connection to a suitable flue gas duct. The district chimney sweep must give his approval after checking suitability.

It is also advisable to have a water connection, at least with cold water. This is needed for a cooling shower, a cold plunge bath and, of course, for cleaning. A sauna without a water connection is rather pointless. After all, water is even needed for the popular infusions, which you don't want to have to lug around.

Build your own sauna - the construction method

Another important basic decision is the construction method of the sauna. The solid wood sauna or the element sauna are tried and tested options. Both systems have their advantages and disadvantages. The most natural form is the log sauna, which provides good insulation with only moderate heating of the wooden surfaces of the sweat room without much effort. On the other hand, an element sauna is easier to construct, but requires more effort in terms of insulation and, due to the special construction method, also heats up the inner surfaces more.

The right wood for your self-build sauna

You can build your own sauna from a variety of suitable woods. Nordic spruce, African abachi wood or the well-known wood of the Canadian hemlock can be considered. Depending on the construction method, the wood is processed into logs or, in the case of the Elementsauma, is applied in thinner layers on an insulating substructure.

The sauna heater - the most important part of your sauna

The most important interior component is the sauna heater. In a self-build sauna, this will usually be an electric heater. The output depends on the type of sauna and the size of the interior. It is advisable to consult an experienced electrician, who will ultimately also be responsible for the electrical connection of the heater, the ventilation system and the lighting system as well as the appropriate sauna control unit. If you prefer a different type of sauna heater, further precautions are required depending on the type of sauna heater. For example, a gas sauna heater also requires a gas connection as well as appropriate air supply and flue gas extraction equipment.
